The guest of our Social Sciences Colloquium lecture on Monday, May 6th is Dr. Burcu Mutlu from Özyeğin University. Burcu Mutlu's article "Moral Calculation for Online Gender Selection in Turkey", which received the Women's Studies Graduate Consortium Main Board Article Award in 2016, focuses on in vitro fertilization and gender selection programs in Turkey. She chooses that the phenomenon of "adopting a son", which is common in Turkish society, is present in the past and that this phenomenon leads couples to gender selection. He emphasizes that women are subjected to pressure and maltreatment by their husbands or their wives' mothers because they cannot give birth to sons. This situation directs couples to gender selection technologies and causes them to stay in dormitories for the options of these technologies. Addressing the issue of gender selection, the article examines the communication and perspectives of women who advocate and oppose gender selection under topics such as science, religion, gender, ignorance, benevolence, and modernity, focusing on the online discussion forum called Women's Club. In the lesson, we talked about the concepts of family distribution and family connections. In our lesson, our teacher Burcu shared with us her field research in the in vitro fertilization clinic in TRNC, how she designed this process and how she detailed the process. We thank our teacher very much.
