You are most cordially invited to Yeditepe Mathematics Department Seminars. The details of this week's talk are as follows.
Speaker: Tekin Dereli (Koç University)
Title: Electromagnetic Hertz potentials and the Cabibbo-Ferrari theory of magnetic monopoles
Abstract: After a brief review of differential geometric gauge aspects of Maxwell equations I am going to introduce Hertz potentials for electro-magnetic fields. This formalism allows for establishing a manifest duality invariance of the Maxwell-Lorentz electrodynamics. As an application I will discuss the Cabibbo-Ferrari theory of magnetic monopoles.
Short Biography:
Prof. Dr. Tekin Dereli is one of the first graduates of Ankara Science High School. He obtained his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Physics at Middle East Technical University (METU). After conducting research at Yale University and Brandeis University in the United States, Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Vienna in Austria, and Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, he served as a professor at METU and Ankara University. During this period, he was an Associate Member at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, and a long-term visiting professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, with a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Currently, he is Emeritus Professor at Koç University, where he was a professor at the department of Physics from 2001 to 2021. He received the TÜBİTAK Science Award in 1996, the Prof. Dr. Mustafa Parlar Foundation Science Award in 1993, and the Sedat Simavi Foundation Science Award in 1989. He was elected a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) in 1994. He has published more than 200 scientific papers on quantum mechanics, quantum gauge field theories, and relativistic gravitational theories.
