Mathematics and Physics Departments Seminar Room
The details of our seminar to be held this week within the scope of Yeditepe University Mathematics Department Seminars are as follows and all interested parties are invited.
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Tekin Dereli (Koç University)
Title: Electromagnetic Hertz potentials and the Cabibbo-Ferrari theory of magnetic monopoles
Abstract: After a brief review of differential geometric gauge aspects of Maxwell equations, I am going to introduce Hertz potentials for electro-magnetic fields. This formalism allows for establishing a manifest duality invariance of the Maxwell-Lorentz electrodynamics. As an application I will discuss the Cabibbo-Ferrari theory of magnetic monopoles.
Short CV: Prof. Dr. Tekin Dereli is one of the first graduates of Ankara Science High School. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Physics at METU. After advanced research at Yale University and Brandeis University in the USA, the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Vienna in Austria and Lancaster University in England, he served as a professor at METU and Ankara Universities. In the meantime, he was an Associate Member of the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, and a long-term visiting professor at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Karlsruhe, Germany, with a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He is a professor emeritus at Koç University, where he was Professor of Physics from 2001 to 2021. He received the 1996 TÜBİTAK Science Award, the 1993 Prof. Dr. Mustafa Parlar Foundation Science Award and the 1989 Sedat Simavi Foundation Science Award. He was elected as a member of TÜBA in 1994. He has published more than 200 scientific papers on quantum mechanics, quantum gauge field theories and relativistic gravitational theories.
