Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies trains translators and interpreters, who will connect the language and communication barriers in our globalizing world, where such need is increasing. Future graduates of this department use Turkish and English very well; have translation and interpreting skills and training; and are equipped with the necessary knowledge in the field of translation and interpreting. The currently intensive international relations of Türkiye leads to various public and private institutions to employ experienced, qualified translators, who go on to work in government establishments, press, media organizations, law companies as well as trade and tourism companies. Moreover, the increasing number of conferences on different topics require qualified conference interpreters too. Yeditepe University’s Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies offers a dynamic undergraduate program that constantly renews itself to meet these needs.

Students choose one of the programs in Russian, Spanish or German and attend the language courses of their chosen program during their four years of study. During the first three years, they attend intensive language courses specific to their chosen program and graduate in the fourth year by taking the translation courses in their chosen language.

Students enrolled in the department start their education in the first year with introductory translation courses, intensive language courses and courses that include field knowledge such as Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Economics, and History of Civilization (Humanities). From the second year onwards, they take theoretical and practical translation courses in various fields such as politics, economics, business, media, communication, medicine, law, literature, natural science and social sciences. In addition to these compulsory courses, they also choose from elective courses in specialized areas such as subtitling, dubbing, editing, cultures, sign language and simultaneous interpreting. Translation and Interpreting Studies students acquire the necessary knowledge about the theoretical framework of translation studies by taking various courses such as Translation Theory, Translation Criticism, Approaches to Translation History, and Translation Editing. Among the compulsory courses of our department, there are courses taught by experts in the field, such as Computer Assisted Technical Translation, which provides a connection with the translation industry. In these courses, students gain experience in different application areas of translation and have the opportunity to meet the industry. Students of the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies increase their cultural awareness through the Translation and Culture course in the program.

Yeditepe University Translation and Interpreting Studies (English) Bachelor's Degree qualification was included in the Turkish Qualifications Framework on 09.05.2024.

The mission of the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies is to train graduates who have a good command of their native language, who can use at least one foreign language in addition to English at an advanced level in written and oral translation endeavors, and who are suitable for employment in the national and international translation industry.

The vision of the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies is to train professionals who are knowledgeable, eager to research and learn, interested in current issues, aware of intercultural relations, knowledgeable about the expectations and conditions of the sector, and able to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in translation and interpreting through scientific methods, using the latest technology and observing ethical values.

Our department has been accredited by The Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of University Programs in Mathematical, Natural and Social Sciences (FEDEK)*to be valid between May 10, 2019, and September 30, 2024.

Graduates of the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies have the opportunity to pursue a career in a wide range of fields when they start working as translators. In addition to translation and interpreting, graduates can also work as lecturers at universities and continue their education with master's and doctoral programs and stay in academia. Graduates who take pedagogical formation within the undergraduate program can also work as teachers.

Experienced translators are especially needed in private and public institutions that help organize international relations. In this sense, Translation and Interpreting Studies graduates can find jobs in government agencies and ministries, as well as in press and media organizations, law offices, tourism agencies and translation agencies. In addition to these fields, they can work as subtitle translators, literary critics, interpreters and managers in various fields such as advertising, finance, insurance and public relations.

The Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies of our university aims to train translators who have the competence, knowledge and cultural equipment to establish intercultural communication effectively, have a good command of Turkish and English languages, and can express themselves both orally and in writing in these languages.

Our students studying in the Department of Translation Studies, where foreign languages, especially English, are predominant, both improve their translation skills in Turkish and English and learn a different foreign language. They can also access various languages they want to learn on a non-credit basis. The School of Foreign Languages offers courses that enable students to acquire reading, comprehension, speaking and translation skills in a second or even a third language other than English.

During their four years of study, Translation and Interpreting  Studies students take courses on the basics of translation, the theoretical aspects of translation studies and specialized field translation courses in their areas of interest. In addition, thanks to agreements with many departments, they can deepen their knowledge through double major and minor applications. Thanks to Erasmus agreements, they can continue their education in another country for a semester to directly experience another culture.

Students who want to specialize in different areas of translation can take courses such as Computer Assisted Technical Translation, Simultaneous Interpreting, Subtitling and Dubbing from experts in the field. In addition, they are trained in the Simultaneous Interpreting Laboratory, which is exclusively used by the Department of Translation Studies, to simulate real scenarios in conference interpreting. At the end of the sixth semester, students take the Screening for Aptitude in Interpreting exam and receive specialized training in conference interpreting and have the opportunity to observe real conferences in addition to the concentrated conference interpreting-focused courses.

Yeditepe University carries out the work of the Bologna Implementation Commission within the framework of national and international qualifications.

In this respect, as a result of the work that has been going on at our university since 2006, the qualifications of all existing programs were determined by taking into account the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework (TYYÇ) and professional and current standards, and by associating them with the learning outcomes of the courses, the teaching has become more planned and qualified as of 2012.

In accordance with the principles of science, cooperation and transparency in education, lesson plans for all programs were prepared and published on the faculty web pages.

Similar studies on international standards continue within the framework of the scientific, dynamic and innovative understanding of our university.

TRA 310 - Internship Course for Translation and Interpreting Studies

Students are required to complete a translation internship of 20 working days at an institution approved by the department. Students present their translation work and the experiences they have gained during the internship to the department's internship committee and receive feedback. The internship, like many other practices in our undergraduate program, is an instructive experience for our students before they start their professional life. Successful completion of TRA 310 Internship course is one of the requirements of graduation.

What to do after the internship?

• Students who have completed their 20 working days of internship are required to make a presentation to their departments explaining their internship process in detail.
• The student who has completed their internship contacts their department and makes their internship presentation. At the end of this presentation, they submit to the department the Internship Notebook stamped and signed by the workplace and samples of the translations they have completed during the internship.
• If the student has signed a confidentiality agreement about the translated texts, they must share a copy of this agreement with the department.
• The student concludes their presentation by answering the questions about the internship experience. At the end of this presentation and once the documents are examined by the department, the grade of TRA 310 Internship is entered as P (Pass) for the student who is considered to have successfully completed the internship.
