Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies – Curriculum

  • The Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies aims to offer course content that combines practice with theory, encouraging integration with the industry and responding to students’ varying needs and interests.
  • The Department offers practical translation courses focusing on the following areas of specialism: Political Science, Economics and Business Administration, Communication and Media, Medicine, Law, World Literature, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences
  • The interpreting courses on offer are: Introduction to Interpreting, Bilateral Interpreting, Recorded Broadcast Translation, Consecutive Interpreting, Community Interpreting, and Conference Interpreting
  • Elective courses: Translation of Texts on Art and the History of Art, Intersemiotic Translation, Translation Project, Legal Interpreting, Introduction to Simultaneous Interpreting, Simultaneous Interpreting, and Simultaneous Interpreting Project
  • Theoretical courses: Translation Theory, Translation Criticism, Approaches to Translation in History and Today, Revising and Editing For Translators, Special Topics In Translation
  • Courses taught by industry professionals: Localization, and Subtitling and Dubbing
  • Translation internship: at the end of the third year, students are required to complete a 20-business-day translation internship at an institution approved by the Department

Academic Activities in the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies

  • Teaching staff in the Department includes one professor, three assistant professors, one lecturer.
  • Number of publications by our academic staff in the last five years: 24, number of conference presentations: 33
  • The Department has organized an international conference and nine seminars.

The Department organized an international conference titled “Transferring/translating cultural images: Parallels between stereotyping and globalising” on 16-17 September 2014. The conference hosted Luc van Doorslaer and Peter Flynn from Leuven University, Joep Leerssen from Amsterdam University, Zrinka Blažević from Zagreb University and Nam Fung Chang and Leo Chan Tak-hung from Lingnan University as well as dozens of researchers from various universities.
